A Medicine Lodge man received a diversion for shooting a mountain lion near his home in November 2007.

Norman Johnson accepted a diversion agreement and was ordered to pay $75 in court costs in late December, said Mel Madorin, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks' law enforcement captain for the western half of the state.

Wildlife officials acquired the adult mountain lion's pelt in March 2008 from a Texas taxidermist.

Officials then said Johnson was chopping wood when he saw the animal in the grass. He retrieved a firearm from his truck and shot it. However, there is no hunting season for mountain lions in Kansas, Madorin said.

Capt. Val Jansen, also with the department's law enforcement section, said Johnson was initially charged with two counts, including illegal taking of a cougar. Officials dismissed that in favor of a second count - continued possession of a cougar.

Numerous residents have reported mountain lion sightings in Kansas over the years, but none ever materialized. Department officials have long said there are no mountain lions in the state, and if there are any, the animals are just passing through.

Until Johnson's cougar, the last documented wild mountain lion in Kansas was killed in Ellis County in 1904.

While Johnson's case is closed, the department continues to test the animal's DNA to see where it came from, and, while not conclusive, it is suspected the animal was wild.
